A Guide to Wine Selection

Category : Food and Drink

Wine selection is a subject regularly asked about to people within the wine industry. What wine is good? What type of wine will I like? What sort of price range should I be looking for to find a good wine? Are online wine sites safe?

Wine selection is a very personal choice. But how would I know what I like? There are many ways to try wines without physically purchasing them first. Many bottle shops that stock a large range of wine will usually have one or more wines for you to try. Many wine companies provide these stores with promotional products to help sell their product.

This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t indulge in their free offerings, by all means, indulge. Good value can sometimes be gained from these promotional offerings as they are usually accompanied with a sale of some sort.

Another good way to try wines is by visiting wineries. Most wineries are beginning to introduce a “tasting fee” to try their wines, but the fee is generally minimal and most times is waived if you purchase some of the wine you’ve just tried. Different options are available to you if you wish to visit wineries. If you have knowledge of a particular winery region, you can plan the trip yourself. Information can also be gathered from the internet about winery regions.

Generally if you’re doing a trip yourself, the first winery you go to on your trip can also help you plan the rest of your trip as they will be very knowledgeable of wineries in the area. If you don’t want to plan one yourself, paid winery trips is an option which is also available. Many companies are available to do these trips, especially in the larger regions.

These a couple of great options to try different wines from different places all from the comfort of home. Firstly, you could join a wine club. Many wine clubs have tasting parties at different times of the year which are sometimes sponsored by wine organisations.

Online wine websites are great if you know what you are buying. Tasting notes are a good way to get an idea of what certain wines are like. Many online wine websites have mixed dozens which can be purchased which will give you knowledge of certain regions and/or certain types of wine.

In the end, its completely your personal choice. Nobody can tell you what wines you should like, but rather give guidance in what you may like.

Wine can be a great shared experience, but above all else, an enjoyable personal experience.
